As part of an agreement that ended the 2020 Nagorno-Karabakh War the town and its surrounding district were initially to be returned to Azerbaijani control by 15 November 2020, but this deadline was subsequently extended to 25 November 2020.^[13]
According to a trilateral statement signed by Azerbaijani President Ilham Aliyev, Russian President Vladimir Putin and Armenian Prime Minister Nikol Pashinyan a complete ceasefire and end to all hostilities in the Nagorno-Karabakh conflict is hereby declared from 00:00 Moscow time on 10 November 2020.The Republic of Azerbaijan and the Republic of Armenia, hereinafter referred to as the Parties, shall stay at the positions they occupy. According to the statement the Republic of Armenia shall return the Kalbajar District to Azerbaijan by 15 of November 2020, but the Armenian side asked Azerbaijan through Russia to extend this period until November 25. It was extended the date of liberation of Kalbajar until November 25 showing humanism by Azerbaijan side taking into account the complexity of the terrain and the size of the territory. Forces that wouldnt reconcile with the defeat committed the ecological terror against Azerbaijan in the region. People who left the area burned their houses as well as forests. Finally, according to the tripartite Declaration signed on November 10, 2020, Kalbajar region was liberated from occupation, the Armed Forces of the Republic of Azerbaijan entered the region and control passed to the Republic of Azerbaijan. According to the statement internally displaced persons and refugees shall return to the territories of Nagorno-Karabakh and adjacent areas under the control of the UN Office of the High Commissioner for Refugees. According to the statement the exchange of prisoners of war, hostages and other detainees as well as the remains of the fatalities shall be carried out. According to the statement all economic and transport links in the region shall be unblocked.
